Comic? Journal? Travel sketchbook? I haven’t exactly settled on what to call this, so you might see me use these terms interchangeably. Anyway, picking up from where we left off, on day 4, we head to the Taronga Zoo Sydney!

A trip to Australia is not complete without seeing any animals, and we saw a lot! I love drawing animals and had a lot of fun researching animal facts and drawing this spread in my sketchbook:

When the animals are active, it makes me think they are happy with their living situation, which in turn makes me happy 🙂

The following day we take the ferry to Manly beach (about 20 minute ride). On the way, we learned that you get a really nice photo op of the Sydney Opera House from the harbor.

We arrive at Manly beach for our group surf session.

On the last day, we have brunch at the Rocks and it happens to be Australia Day!

I stopped the comic/travel journal here since it felt appropriate. This comic is far from perfect, but that’s not the point of it. The point of this is to get a comic made, having an idea to draw something and sticking to it until the end. Hopefully for future trips I can work on the comics and pages during the trip, “in real time” if you will, or at least within a day or two (whether or not that’s possible, we’ll just have to see). I’m really curious to see how the travel journal will turn out with the time constraint, perhaps I’ll really have to pick and choose which specific bits to highlight. For now, this was a good test to see what it would be like if I kept track of my travels in a sketchbook.
I hope you enjoyed looking at this travel comic! Australia was just what we needed to get away for a bit this past winter. I always feel inspired when traveling and I hope to carry this energy into the coming days and continue capturing moments worth remembering!
